Why your business card fails the WOW TEST and what to do about it...

Do any of these three things sound familiar?

  • You go to all the networking events, do everything the gurus tell you but the business always seems to go to someone else.
  • You have had business cards printed and subsequently thrown them away. Still in the box.
  • Your networking group includes several general printers who design and print for the whole group.

Hi, I'm Jonathan. I want to do ONE THING on this page - and that is to make your business card more effective at generating business.

Here is a question that you MUST be able to answer YES to...

“Is the card that I have in my hand, pocket or wallet right now going to get me business?”

If the answer is "NO" or "I don't know, where do you go for feedback?

You could ask your friends and family; their support has got you this far… They may be more or less critical than you need them to be – just because they are family and friends, almost certainly they will try to avoid hurting your feelings or risk troubling the friendship.

In short, they aren’t the best people to give impartial business advice or offer a business card review.

You could ask someone at a networking event for feedback. You could even do a business card review swap.

Finding someone with that level of trust and impartiality can take a LONG TIME.

group of people

But how do we allow ourselves to get into this mess?

Ask yourself a question (and be honest - you don't have to tell anyone the answer...) Have you ever been to an event and been motivated - I mean REALLY motivated to do something by a speaker or guru?

Maybe you risked life and limb dashing through traffice to get home, turned on your computer at 2am and aggressively designed a new business card or flier.

Then what happens?

Time moves on, the feel good factor of the guru wears off and you are left with boxes and boxes of business cards that you flat out HATE. So you heave them all into the trash.

aggressive business men

Is this you when you have been to see a networking guru?

Ask me how I know this....

frustrated man

Because I was that person. I know what it's like to feel the oozing of emotion after walking out of the door of an event. I know what it's like to frantically search through deals and free shipping and design tools online.

I also know what it's like further down the track. When the warm glow wears off and time moves on. The business card you enthusiastically designed is now old hat. And it gets dumped in the trash with the same force and aggression it got designed with in the first place.

If your business card is your only marketing tool - You are trusting your livelihood to it.

It actually got WORSE than that though - wasting money I mean...

I had a morbid fear - that other networkers were ridiculing me.

I was worried that because the phone was less then ringing off the hook as a result of my activities, there must be something WRONG with my card. That there must be some kind of secret that the rest of the world knew and were keeping from me. After a short period of thinking about the card, I could see its fault. I figured that the rest of the world must be able to also.

There WAS a secret - It's just not the ones that you might be thinking of.

Read on to see how I set about finding it.

So I thought - enough already Enough already. What are the GOOD people doing?

Most networkers collect loads of business cards right? But what do they do with them?

If you go to a networking event, how card cards will you collect? 5,10, more?

If you go to several events per week, you will soon accumulate a whole stack of business cards. But what to do with them? Sure you can enter them into a database or connect on LinkedIn or some other time sucking activity.

When you take someones card, you look at it, maybe a couple of times and think - Is this person likely to be useful to me? If you are foresighted, you will think a couple of weeks ahead.

Most people just think "Is this person likely to want to buy what I am selling?

Trying to sell too soon is something that all networking gurus bang on about BUT - NOT ONE OF THEM suggests - what I am going tell you.

I actually set out collecting cards - as many as I could. I actively hoovered them up as much as possible. I knew that most of them would be garbage and junk BUT each one would add a little bit to offer.

I looked at several areas on each card

Most gurus will talk about "getting your message out there" and everything is to be geared to making as much noise as possible. I preferred to use the cards as tools in a giant experiment. I took each card in turn and look at a number of things.

I looked at the message that the card was trying to convey. And how it did it via text, graphics and fonts.

I looked at how each card was laid out and how this helped the to get responses and action from whoever received it.

Finally I looked at the contact details used on the card and how these can be strategically used and when.

Introducing... success fragments.

I knew that buried in this massive pile of essentially garbage, there were nuggets of information that I could use. Micro pieces of information that could be stripped out and re-used.

  • Each card had good stuff and bad stuff in it.
Over time (and looking at hundred and hundreds, if not thousands of cards), it was quite easy to sort the good from the bad, the wheat from the chaff, the business cards that would generate business and those that would end up in the recycle box.
  • This wasn't passing judgement - It was business.
People are increasingly hard wired to take offence when somebody passes comment on something they have done. The best part about this though was that people were in social experiment - but they didn't know it. I had no reason to tell them...
  • Plus I had accidentally built a design and review system.
That each business card I was presented with could easily be measured against these success fragments. Plus, I could design my own with minimum effort, fuss, or input from gurus. (neat or what?)

Neat or what eh?

Once I had these success fragments, then what?

By looking to design my own card more effectively, I had stumbled on a review system. A way of instantly looking at a card and telling within a few minutes, if it could cut the mustard or if it was destined to end life as a recycled toilet roll or kids colouring book.

I could look at a card and within a few minutes, know if it met the success fragment standards.

I can now make available to the public.

The business card voyeur

It's simple - you just send me your business card (via a secure form) and I will review it using the success fragments I uncovered in my research and send you a report back with SPECIFIC action points and findings.

You need to be able to scan and email your card. (I will need front and back).

There are THREE steps to the business card voyeur.

  • FIRST STEP
  • Second STEP
  • Third step

Scan and send me your business card. The scan needs to be readable and I need to see the front and back of the card. Don't worry - there is a special form for you to do this.

It's time to decide

You can go on, stuck in a cycle of aggressively designing cards, having second thoughts and doubts eating at you, dumping a whole batch and starting again.

Or you can take stock, take a deep breath, take yourself out of this vicious, never ending (and not to mention expensive...) cycle and request a business card voyeur.

About Jonathan

Away from working online, I have been a triathlete for over 20 years. I am a multiple Ironman finisher and a running coach. When not down the pool, road or track, I like punk rock, rap and rugby league.

I know you will have a lot of questions

  • What happens after I order?
  • Can I discuss the findings?
  • i disagree with your finding

After you have filled in the webform, you will be taken to the secure order form. Once your payment is cleared, I will send you an initial survey. These few questions are something only you as the business owner can answer. You need to be able to scan your business card and upload it via a special form. Once you do this, it will be 5-7 days before your report is ready.

Is it possible to talk to you before you carry out the review?

No sorry. Remember, I am trying to replicate what a typical visitor will do.

Is the report confidential?

Oh yes. Super confidential. This won't turn up as a case study on a webinar or be hawked down at the local networking group. The only people who will know this has ever happened will be you and me.

Are these success fragments for sale ? So I can do my own review for instance?

No, these are closely guarded intellectual property that took a great deal of effort to compile. They are not for sale at any price.
